Presently at the University of Sheffield as Director for Studies Dr Burney oversees the clinical education of undergraduate medical students during their 3rd year. As the Academic Lead for Clinical Skills he is  responsible for the development and delivery of clinical skills education across all years of the course. He is also a tutor for the School of Nursing and the School of Dentistry and for the Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education.

HIs contributions to medical education have been recognised by the Medical School, and he is the recipient of the Exceptional Contribution Award (ECA) – (2011), University of Sheffield and for three years running (2015, 2016, 2017) as the recipient of the ‘Greatest Contribution to Teaching Award’ voted by medical students and awarded by the University of Sheffield Medical Society (MedSoc).

Dr Burney is the Founding President of APPNE The Association of Pakistani Physicians of Northern Europe (March 2019-2021),  which now comprises more than 1400  doctors, medical students and allied healthcare professions from the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and Germany.

He is an active member of the NHS Volunteer Responders (Royal Volunteer Service) and of the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA), he has organised and led the program entitled ‘Lifesavers’ which teaches basic lifesaving skills to members of the local communities in Nottingham.
