Prof. Ronald M Harden

Ronald Harden (Professor, PhD, Author, OBE, MD, FRCP (GLAS.), FRCS (ED.), FRCPC) graduated from medical school in Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

He completed training and practiced as an endocrinologist before moving full time to medical education.

He is Professor of Medical Education (Emeritus), University of Dundee, Editor of Medical Teacher, and was General Secretary and Treasurer of AMEE – An International Association for Medical Education.

Professor Harden has pioneered ideas in medical education, including:

  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
  • the SPICES model for curriculum planning
  • the FAIR principles for effective teaching
  • the use of student portfolios for assessment
  • the Three-Circle model of outcome-based education
  • Best Evidence Based Medical Education
  • the ASPIRE-to-Excellence initiative.

He has published more than 400 papers in leading journals. He is co-editor of A Practical Guide for Medical Teachers, now in its 6th edition, and the Routledge International Handbook of Medical Education. He is co-author of Essential Skills for a Medical Teacher: An introduction to Learning and Teaching in Education, The Definitive Guide to the OSCE, and The Eight Roles of the Medical Teacher.

Professor Harden’s contributions to excellence in medical education have attracted numerous international awards, including:

  • an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen for services to medical education, UK
  • the Hubbard Award by the National Board of Medical Examiners, USA
  • the Karolinska Institute Prize for Research in Medical Education, which recognises high-quality research in medical education
  • the MILES Award by the National University of Singapore
  • the ASME Richard Farrow Gold Medal
  • the AMEE Lifetime Achievement Award
  • a Cura Personalis Honour, the highest award given by Georgetown University, Washington, DC, USA. He was awarded the Gusi Peace Prize for services to medical education and the honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Dundee
