Professor Charles Docherty,
Director, Centre for Innovation in Medical Education
Professor Docherty studied nursing at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, in the college made famous by its founder, Rebecca Strong, a student of Florence Nightingale. While being a charge nurse in ICU, he obtained both Masters of Nursing and PhD from Glasgow University. Doctoral studies focused on the use of multimedia as a means of helping mentors assess students’ clinical skills.
Since 1988, Professor Docherty has been an educator and his research interests have paralleled innovative developments in education. In Glasgow Caledonian University he designed a simulation laboratory around a workflow based on an innovative educational paradigm. Working with the British Council in Jordan, he introduced a problem-based learning curriculum to Hashemite University, the first of its kind in the country. In 2008 he was appointed as Director of Clinical Simulation, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Bahrain campus. During his time there he established a training centre for advanced clinical simulators, made dramatic improvements in business development within the school, transforming the curriculum and teaching methods. He was awarded an honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 2011.
His vision is to work with colleagues and students, within AKU, nationally and regionally to realise the tremendous potential of the Centre for Innovation in Medical Education in Aga Khan University, Karachi.
